50 Dead in Himachal Pradesh Due to Cloudburst, Heavy Rain to Continue in Kerala

In Himachal Pradesh, around 50 people are feared dead after severe cloudburst incidents. The state’s minister, Vikramaditya Singh, mentioned that the exact number of casualties can only be confirmed once the search and rescue operations are completed. The government’s current priority is to recover bodies and restore connectivity in the flood-affected regions.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy rain for Himachal Pradesh until August 7. In response to the disaster, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced financial aid of ₹50,000 for each family impacted by the flash floods.

The IMD also issued a red alert for several regions including Gujarat, West Madhya Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Assam, and Meghalaya for August 3, 2024. Extremely heavy rainfall is anticipated in areas such as Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa, and Meghalaya on the same day. Additionally, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are expected in isolated locations across Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, and Bihar.

In Maharashtra, a red alert has been announced for Satara district on August 3 and 4, predicting extremely heavy rain in Palghar and Pune districts on August 4. The Vidarbha region may experience very heavy rainfall on August 3, and Marathwada is likely to see similar conditions on August 3 and 4.

Heavy rainfall is expected to persist in Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan, and Goa from August 3 to 7. The IMD forecasts widespread light to moderate rainfall over Coastal Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Kerala, Mahe, and Karnataka sub-divisions in the next five days, with isolated heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Rayalaseema during the same period.

In Kerala, heavy rain is expected until August 5. The state is still reeling from a tragic landslide in Wayanad that has claimed over 300 lives.

Over the past 24 hours, several regions including Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, Coastal Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka, Gujarat, and Madhya Maharashtra have reported heavy rainfall. Other areas experiencing significant rainfall include Kerala, Punjab, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Saurashtra, Kutch, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Konkan, Goa, Bihar, Odisha, North Interior Karnataka, West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura.
