Indians who come for CNG cars! Record level growth in sales- what is the reason?
CNG (compressed natural gas) is currently in the Indian passenger vehicle market as a cleaner fuel technology without issuing less pollution than petrol and diesel. Given the demand for CNG vehicles, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Hyundai are selling vehicles in the ground, but other OEMs like Renault and Nissan are also offering CNG retrofit kits to their vehicles. Toyota also repeated the Maruti Suzuki model and sells CNG cars in India.
CNG car sales (CVI22) increase by 35 %.
In the calendar year 2024, retail sales of CNG passenger vehicles increased by 35 %. This cleaner explains attractive benefits to fuel. Maruti Suzuki has sold over 5 lakh units in the first year with its 15 CNG models and has maintained its hold on this section with a market share of 71.60 percent. Tata Motors sold 1,15,432 units and won a market share of 16.13 %. According to data data, Hyundai sold 71,811 units and Toyota 15,815 units in the last calendar year. Both OEMs recorded 10.04 percent and 2.21 percent respectively.

Maruti Suzuki and Tata CNG sales in financial year 2025
Tata Motors is selling passenger vehicles in models such as Petrol-CNG by-Fuel Povertrain and factory-fit-cylinder CNG kit such as Tiago, Tigor, Panch and Ultros. The demand for CNG passenger vehicles increased by 35 percent, the company said. The domestic auto giant has sold 1.39 lakh CNG -operated passenger vehicles in FY22, compared to 91,000 units in FA24.
India’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki has sold about 6.2 lakh CNG power passenger vehicles in FA 22. This indicates an increase of more than 28 percent per year. It is clear that CNG is one of the three Maruti Suzuki cars sold in FA22. Interestingly, this number has also crossed the company’s initial target. At the beginning of the last financial year, the aim of auto giants is to sell six million CNG cars.
What are the reasons for the development of CNG car sales?
The Indian passenger vehicle is an important and versatile change in the market. One of the major changes is to achieve CNG cars widely. In the past, the use of CNG in the individual vehicle segment was low. It was only a fuel option in the category of commercial vehicle segment and fleet. However, customers who care about the cost of petrol and diesel prices are bending towards CNG -operated passenger vehicles.
The challenges of getting electric vehicles, IE range anxiety, high early costs, and lack of adequate public charging infrastructure are also increasing the importance of consumers towards CNG cars. Although hybrid is a viable selection to fill the difference between pure ice (internal combination engine) models and electric vehicles, high purchase costs and lack of model availability in the market are blocking the speed of sales.
Under such circumstances, CNG is a viable fuel solution. It releases low cost, low maintenance costs and low pollution. It also benefits from government rules.
