The Gujarat Congress plans to launch a protest march called ‘Nyay Padyatra’ (Justice March) on August 9. This march will be led by Congress Seva Dal chief Lalji Desai, Gujarat Congress President Shaktisinh Gohil, and Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and party president Mallikarjun Kharge are also expected to participate.
The yatra will begin in Morbi and end in Gandhinagar on August 22. The Congress aims to highlight recent tragedies in Gujarat, such as the Morbi bridge collapse, the TRP Game zone fire in Rajkot, and the Harni Lake incident in Vadodara.
Gujarat Congress president Shaktisinh Gohil stated that the march seeks justice for the victims of these disasters. He criticized the BJP-led government, alleging that these incidents are the result of systemic corruption and negligence.
August 9 is a significant date in Indian history as it marks the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s call for civil disobedience during the Quit India Movement in 1942.
Shailesh Parmar, deputy leader in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, explained that the march is meant to expose alleged corruption under the BJP government, which he claims has led to tragedies like the Morbi bridge collapse, the Rajkot fire, and the Vadodara lake incident.
The march will start in Morbi, where a bridge collapse in October 2022 killed around 135 people. It will travel through various districts to Gandhinagar, including 101 core participants and families of victims to emphasize the human cost of alleged misgovernance.
As the march moves through districts, the Congress plans to hold public dialogue sessions. Gujarat Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi confirmed that senior leaders, including Kharge, Rahul, and Priyanka Gandhi, have been informed and their participation is anticipated.
During his recent visit to Gujarat, Rahul Gandhi met with families affected by these tragedies, including the Rajkot game zone fire that killed 27 people in May, the boat capsize in Vadodara in January that claimed 14 lives, and the Morbi bridge collapse.
