Krishna Water Allocation: Krishna Water Allocation – AP Government in Supreme Court, hearing in February
The AP government has challenged the Central government’s notification to divert Krishna river water between the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. This matter was mentioned in the Supreme Court. The petition refers to two references filed before the Krishna Tribunal related to the transfer of Krishna river water.
Notification in October
The central government has issued a gazette notification on October 23, 2023 that the transfer of Krishna river water will be done between the two states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Challenging this, the AP government approached the Supreme Court. The AP government on Thursday mentioned the petition in this regard before a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Koteshwar Singh.
Hearing on 13th February…
Senior advocate Jaideep Gupta, appearing for the AP government, cited the decision taken by the Krishna Tribunal before the bench. On February 19, the matter was brought to the notice of the tribunal for hearing on the second reference. Before the hearing of Krishna Tribunal, he said that his petition should be heard immediately. The Supreme Court considered the reference of the AP government. It has been announced that the next hearing will be held on February 13 at 2 pm.
Recently the decision of Brijesh Kumar Tribunal…
Recently, the decision of Brijesh Kumar Tribunal was released on the gazette notification issued by the Central Government on 23 October 2023. AP and Telangana have filed two references in the tribunal on transfer of water share under the Bifurcation Act. The Brijesh Kumar tribunal has already given its verdict on water transfer between Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
In 2014, the Telangana government approached the tribunal over the Krishna River water transfer issue that arose after the bifurcation of the state. Most of the Krishna river flows in their area…so they demanded 70 percent share in the water as per the State Division Act. Otherwise, the Telangana government has requested to distribute 50 per cent to both the states.
Before the tribunal’s decision on this matter…the central government issued a notification on 10 October 2023. The central government has said in the notification that the water transfer between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana should be settled and examined as per the States Bifurcation Act. The AP government has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the notification issued by the Central Government. The Krishna Tribunal decided on the 16th of this month that out of the two references before it, the first to be investigated would be the reference to the Gazette Notification issued by the Central Government in 2023.
Andhra Pradesh referred the tribunal’s decision to the Supreme Court. On 19 February, AP’s lawyer Jaideep Gupta asked the tribunal to hear the second reference. He demanded a speedy investigation into his petition. A bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Koteshwar Singh, which was considering the AP government’s reference, announced that the next hearing will be held on February 13 at 2 pm.
