Krishna Waters Issue: Krishna Water dispute between AP and Telangana

The water level in joint projects on the Krishna Waters Issue Krishna River is rapidly decreasing, and severe water scarcity in the areas has been fuel by Telangana and AP water dispute. Krishna Board (KRMB) has been criticized for its priority for AP and Telangana.

KRMB has decided to take action from two states on the use of water as part of the current storage of joint projects on Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar. The Telangana government opposed this decision. To this extent, KRMB wrote a letter. The remaining water in two reservoirs is allocated for the use of Telangana. AP has already used more water than its share and asked the board to consider the remaining water as a special share.

Telangana alleges that by the end of January, AP had consumed more water from joint projects and 36.67 TMCs were higher than their share. In a letter to KRMB, Telangana said that AP is still taking water, 10,000 kusak per day from Nagarjuna Sagar and 1.5 TMC water from Sriselum. 666.68 TMCS (66%of the water year) and 343.446 TMCs (34%) were allocated under temporary understanding of the state after the division of the state.

It is alleged that AP has been highly used

As of 11 February, Krishna Board estimates that joint projects, Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar, are part of 27.03 TMC of AP. Telangana can use 131.75 TMC surplus water. Another 158.78 TMC water for two states can be used in the next four months. The net availability of Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar Project is only 94.4 TMC. However, there are 64 TMCs less than the summer of both states.

Telangana is angry at the attitude of Krishna Board. The board wants to allocate access to available water in two reservoirs. AP argues that it takes more water annually. Telangana demands that 27 TMC water from Tungabhadra, Down, Pulichinthla and Gazuldin projects to meet the summer needs.

The KRMB meeting to be held on 21 February has been ranked 24th. The Telangana government has requested the Krishna Board to stop the release of AP from Srisailum and Nagarjunasagar reservoirs till the decision of water allocation in the board meeting to be held on 24 February.
