The bank made the customer mobile number and Rs. Scammers who cheat for Rs 11.55 crore
The latest incident has come to light when cyber criminals hacked a customer at Himachal Pradesh State Cooperative Bank and prepared Rs 11.55 crore from the bank.
Just with mobile number
Scammers have first sent a link to a mobile number related to a customer in Himachal Pradesh State Cooperative Bank branch, which is in Halty in Chamba district. They told him that mobile banking could be done. So, the customer downloaded the fake application. Later, the fraudsters hacked the customer mobile number using this access to the customer account. The bank was also able to reach the Internet system. Nearly Rs. 11.55 crore has been transferred to 20 separate accounts through NEFT and RTGS transactions.

The scam took place between May 11 and May 12. It was unknown till 14 May, as the banks were on leave on 13 May. The bank has identified fraud after receiving a transaction report from the Reserve Bank of India. When the scam survived, zero FIR was lodged at the Sadar police station in Shimla, the Chief Information Security Officer of the bank. The investigation was then handed over to the cyber police station. The authorities immediately kept all the accounts related to the scam to prevent more informal transactions.
With a fraudulent app link
Hackers hacked the customer mobile phone using a fake application called Himpaisa. The bank has accessed the Internet banking system through this malicious app and identified these informal transfer.
Snake in the ground
The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (Ser T-in) team is coming to Shimla to conduct a deep investigation at the bank data center. The investigation of the sert will be focused on how hackers have entered and whether the bank system has other security weaknesses.
RBI guidelines to prevent digital banking fraud
RBI has issued guidelines to help customers protect them from such fraud. This includes:
- Do not share your login credential, pin, OTP or card information.
- Avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading files from unknown resources.
- Avoid establishing applications from non -square resources.
- Be careful about UPI, ‘Gather requests’ so that scammers can send fake payment signals.
- Always rely on official websites of banks or service providers for contact information.
