Called trulli houses, the homes were built to be easily dismantled and constructed using mortar-less drystone walls. This style of construction was caused by a settlement tax in the Kingdom of Naples. The local lord, Count Acquaviva, forced residents into the homes in order to avoid the tax since no mortar was used.
