Given its name, one might expect it to be a traditional baked good in Germany, or at least one of the former German colonies, perhaps one where coconut was popular. In truth, the cake’s name is misleading … geographically, at least. Sam German created a type of sweet baking chocolate in 1852. The company that manufactured it, Baker’s, named it in his honor. Just over a century later, a Dallas newspaper included a recipe from a local woman for a chocolate and coconut cake that used German’s Chocolate. Word of the recipe spread; sales of the baking chocolate soared; and German’s chocolate cake soon became the much-loved German chocolate cake.:
